Watch Repair & Servicing FAQs

Pricing & Estimates

How much does a watch repair cost?

Every watch is different, so every repair is too. Pricing depends on the type of watch, the extent of the work, and any parts that need to be replaced. Once we've taken a look at your timepiece, we'll provide a clear, itemized estimate before any work begins — so you're never left wondering.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Bring your watch in, and our watch repair team will assess it and walk you through what's needed and why, at no cost to you. Please note we do charge a $250 estimatation fee for vintage watches.

Will I be charged if I decide not to move forward?

Our estimates are typically free, with no obligation to move forward with the exception of the vintage watch estimation fee. If we send your watch out to an outside watchmaker for an estimate on your behalf, you will incur the shipping costs regardless of whether you choose to move forward.

Turnaround & Process

How long does a repair or service take?

Timing varies by the work involved. Simple repairs, like battery replacements, are often completed by the next business day. Most complete services require 3 weeks when it's completed in-house and anywhere from 3-6 months total when it's with an outside watchmaker. We'll give you an estimated timeframe when we talk with you.

Do I need an appointment?

No, you do not need an appointment! If you want to drop off your watch for servicing, you can leave it with our Service Coordinator to get it in the queue.

Do I need to bring my watch in person, or can I ship it?

Both options are available. If you're not local to Shadyside, we can arrange for you to ship your watch to us securely.

How will I know when my watch is ready?

We'll contact you directly as soon as your watch has been completed and quality checked.

Servicing Basics

How often should I service my watch?

As a general rule, most mechanical watches benefit from a full service every 3 to 5 years. That said, the right interval depends on your watch's brand, age, and how often you wear it. We're happy to recommend a schedule tailored to your specific timepiece.

What does a full service include?

A complete service typically involves disassembling the movement, cleaning and lubricating each component, replacing worn parts, and reassembling and regulating the watch for accuracy. We'll also check the case and water resistance to make sure everything is sealed and functioning as it should.

What's the difference between a service and a repair?

Think of servicing as preventive care, routine maintenance that keeps your watch running smoothly over time. A repair, on the other hand, addresses a specific issue, like a broken part or water damage. Sometimes a repair naturally calls for a service as well, and we'll always explain what we recommend and why.

How do I know if my watch needs servicing?

A few common signs: your watch is running fast or slow; the power reserve seems shorter than usual; you notice moisture under the crystal, or it's simply been several years since its last service. When in doubt, bring it by — we're glad to take a look.

What happens if I skip servicing altogether?

Over time, the lubricants inside a mechanical watch break down, which can lead to increased wear, timing issues, and eventually more significant (and costly) damage. Regular servicing is one of the simplest ways to protect your investment in the long run.

Specific Repairs

Can you repair a cracked or scratched crystal?

We can replace many watch crystals, but it depends on the watch.

My watch is running fast, slow, or has stopped altogether. What's wrong?

This can point to a number of things, from a movement that simply needs cleaning and regulating, to a deeper mechanical issue. Our watchmaker will diagnose the cause and explain the best path forward.

Do you replace watch batteries?

We do, for most quartz watches. Please note that we do not replace batteries for Invicta watches, however, as the brand requires it to be sent back to the manufacturer.

Can you fix water damage?

In some cases, yes. Though the outcome depends on how much moisture reached the movement and how quickly it's brought in. If you suspect water has gotten inside your watch, don't wait. Bring it to us as soon as possible to give us the best chance of a full recovery.

Can you resize my bracelet or replace my strap?

Absolutely. We offer bracelet sizing and strap replacement for a comfortable, secure fit.

I dropped my watch and it stopped working. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. Bring it in and we'll assess the movement and case for any damage, then let you know exactly what repairs are needed.

Do you polish watch cases and bracelets?

We do and the cost varies. Polishing can restore your watch's shine and help minimize the appearance of everyday scratches.

Brand & Watch Type

What brands do you service?

We will happily repair, or facilitate the repair of any watch brand we sell and have extensive experience with all the leading fine watch brands, including Rolex, TUDOR, Omega, NOMOS Glashütte, Longines, Tissot, Patek Philippe, Cartier, and many others.

Are you an authorized service center?

We hold Rolex Authorized Service Center status, and our Certified Watchmakers are trained to work on a wide range of brands with the same level of precision and care.

Do you work on vintage or antique watches?

We do not perform work on vintage timepieces in-house, as they often call for extra care and, in some cases, specialty parts. We are happy to facilitate service through an outside watchmaker, with a $250 estimation fee.

Can you service quartz watches or smartwatches too?

Yes, we service quartz watches, often for bracelet resizing and battery replacements. We generally don’t handle repairs for smart watches.

Trust & Guarantees

Is my repair guaranteed?

We stand behind our work and will discuss the specific details for your repair when we provide your estimate. If you’re unhappy at any time with your repair or service, please reach out to us or your sales associate. Our goal is always to retain your trust as a satisfied customer.

Will a third-party repair void my manufacturer warranty?

If your watch is still covered by its original warranty, it usually needs to be repaired by the manufacturer or manufacturer's authorized repair center, or we risk voiding the warranty. In this case, we will coordinate with the manufacturer's service department to get the watch fixed for you as quickly as possible. If you believe your watch is under warranty, please bring the original warranty card or papers with your watch to the store.

Are your watchmakers certified?

Yes. Our watchmakers, Paul Capar and Greta Berckmueller, are certified through the Swiss American Watchmakers Training Alliance (SAWTA) at The Lititz Watch Technicum.

Is my watch insured while it's in your care?

Your timepiece's safety is our priority from the moment it's in our hands until it's back on your wrist. We're happy to answer any specific questions about our care process when you bring your watch in.

Do you use genuine parts?

Whenever possible, we use manufacturer-approved or genuine parts to preserve your watch's performance, value, and authenticity.

Water Resistance

Do you offer water pressure testing?

Yes we do for a nominal fee.

My watch is labeled water resistant. Why did water get in?

Water resistance isn't permanent. The gaskets and seals that keep moisture out naturally wear down over time and need periodic replacement. Regular servicing helps maintain that protection.

A Few more things to know

What if I don't have the original box or papers?

No problem at all. We're happy to service your watch with or without its original documentation, but it can help to ensure warranties stay in tact.

Do you buy or trade watches, or only repair them?

We also buy watches and give customers the option to accept cash offers or trade in for another purchase. Please email davidclow@hennejewelers.com to get started.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept all major forms of payment for watch servicing.
