By Stephanie Desmond for Henne Jewelers
Many think that February is the month of red – love, cupid, roses – but that is not the case. In fact, the month belongs to purple and the amethyst!
The February-born shall find
Sincerity and peace of mind,
Freedom from passion and from care,
If they an amethyst will wear.
The birthstones as we know them today were first standardized by the National Association of Jewelers in 1912. Before the current list was created, hyacinth and pearl were also used as February’s birthstone. The form of quartz is also associated with those born on a Wednesday and the zodiac sign Pisces.
Amethyst can be found throughout ancient mythology. It was believed to have protective powers in Greek lore and English superstitions. In fact, medieval European soldiers often wore amethyst amulets in battle. They believed the gem was able to heal people and would keep them even tempered.
Although this gorgeous stone can be found in several countries, there are many regions in North America where amethyst occurs in nature. Mountainous regions in Arizona, Colorado, Texas, Maine and more feature grounds for mining the stone.
One of these regions is about four hours east of Pittsburgh in Delaware County, Pennsylvania. You don’t have to travel quite that far, though. Just stop in Henne Jewelers for a wide selection of amethyst perfect for any February baby!
For a different spin on traditional amethyst, try these lovely earrings. The rounded gems are set in 18k gold and surrounded by diamond accented prongs.
No matter what style you choose, amethyst is great for any occasion and will hopefully protect you throughout your day!
